RedHanded

Slow Strummers Need Not Apply #

by why in cult

Oh, okay, that’s where I was. I stopped to post about NARMo and then I got busy trying to reach the hollow of a chocolate rabbit and then I tried to save my spiral notebook that went through the wash and I stopped to watch quail with a policeman and, okay, now I’m back posting about NARMo.

You have twenty-seven days left to setup your toms and hire a floutist. Now this is Camping! Did you know Topher Cyll hooked up ERb to Camping? He said so publickly. Someone warn him of the damage he’s doing to his future. My critics, in particular, do not condone Camping! I hope he has an emergency contact or blood relative who can be notified. I do not want to be his uncles right now!

I think I’ve got a few tens of minutes of music in me, but I can’t do everything myself, especially not with Inkscape and a comic project going on.

So, okay, here’s a thing: how about a RedHanded album? I’m sure we’ve got quite a few musically-inclined among the ‘handed.

Songs would be about Ruby or taken from RedHanded posts maybe. Any takers?

For what it’s worth, here’s what I could bring to a collaboration…

Things I do reasonably well: composition/arrangement, writing sheet music/tablature, playing the pennywhistle.

Things I could do if I had to: muddle through keyboard parts, do (tolerable) audio post-production.

You should not ask me to: play most other instruments (badly), write lyrics (far too slowly).

M..T.L,.Y: I decree you should play the pennywhistle for 31 minutes. That’s only one minute a day.

Well, maybe.

I suppose I’m taking this too seriously (but I still think a collaboration of the ‘handed would be neat).

I think it would be terrific. Hey, I tried to collaborate with ‘Handers once! (4th comment.)

After OSCON , Robby Russell talked about doing a Ruby-themed mix album. It would be disastrous and I want one.

Heh, I remember that. I contemplated posting a URL to a mod_rewrite-disguised CGI that output an infinitely-long (looped) stream of MP3 “OOOOO”.

Then I got distracted reading up on the MPEG frame format and never wrote a line of code.

(Maybe it’s just as well; people not watching their downloads carefully might have found it a bit anti-social.)

…distracted reading up on the MPEG frame format…

Good lord, that speaks for all of us. I was wondering the other day. What is it about protocols and RFCs and file formats that just draws us in? For some reason, a really wicked protocol can yank me in. Pure possession. It must be a decoding fever.

Seriously.

Now I’ve just got to stay away from specifications for a while…

One minute of song (expressly not about feet) recorded, thirty to go…

NAR Mo sounds cool.

Actually, I’ve been doing some music composition stuff with Ruby. If I get it working before the deadline, I might submit some of that…

The plan is to make it collaborative, so that a bunch of people can pop open irb (or tryruby for that matter), open a DRb socket, and start composing together.
